-----------At the Oil Baron's Ball, John Ross wins the Oil Baron Of The Year Award.
-----------A fight erupts between the Ewings and Tripp, during which Carter McKay collapses.
Hyatt Regency, Dallas.....
"John Ross, are you sure you're alright?" Sue Ellen asks her son.
"I"m fine," John Ross says as Jillian walks up to him.
"Is it true? What Mr. McKay said?" Jillian asks. "You stole Westar from me by blackmailing the largest stockholders out of their shares?"
John Ross looks at his half-sister, but doesn't say anything. Jillian shakes her head in disgust, then turns and walks away.
Meanwhile, the paramedics load McKay onto the stretcher. Tracey and Tripp stand back as they prepare to transport Carter to the hospital. "Aunt Tracey, he's gonna be okay," Tripp tells his aunt in an attempt to reassure her.
"Can we ride with him?" Tripp asks one of the paramedics.
"Are you family?" The paramedic asks.
"I'm his daughter," replies Tracey. "This is his grandson."
"Only one of you can ride."
"Aunt Tracey, go ahead," says Tripp. "I'll meet you at the hospital."
"I'll come with you," Pamela tells Tripp.
"You don't have to."
"I know," Pamela says. "But I want to."
Tripp nods, then takes Pamela's hand.
Bobby walks up to Tracey as she is following the paramedic's out with her father. "Tracey," he says. "I'm real sorry about all this."
Parkland Memorial Hospital...
"It hasn't been that long," says Pamela.
"Been almost an hour an a half," Tripp says.
"Can I get either of you anything? Tracey, would you like some coffee or something?" Pamela asks.
"No, thank you, Pamela. I do need some air, though. I'm gonna step outside. Please come get me if the doctor comes out."
"We will," Pamela says. Tracey leaves the room. Pamela gently rubs the back of Tripp's head. "Are you okay?"
Pamela stands and walks over to him. She puts her arms around him and holds him as he cries. "It's okay. It's okay," she says.
Pamela touches his face. "I wouldn't be anywhere else tonight."
Tracey walks back into the room. "Damn, it's cold outside," she says, shivering.
Southfork....
"I'm glad you came back with us after the ball," says Bobby. "You want a drink?"
"No thanks, I'm drivin'."
"You know, you both could spend the night if you want,"
"I'd actually like that," Lucas says. "I'll see if Emma wants to. I don't much feel like drivin' all the way back t town this late."
"Ya know, Lucas, that was pretty awesome, the way you jumped into the fight," Christopher says.
Lucas smiles. "It was instinct, really. John Ross isn't my favorite person by a long shot, but, family sticks together against outsiders, right?"
Christopher looks at Bobby and smiles. "Sounds just like a Ewing, huh, Dad?"
"Yes," Bobby says as Ann and Emma walk in.
"Well," Ann says. "That was some evenin'. I think I'm ready for bed."
"Me too," Emma agrees. "I'm exhausted."
"Hey, you wanna spend the night here?" Lucas asks her.
Ann smiles. "Why don't you? It's almost one in the mornin', and you're room's still right there."
Emma nods. "Okay. Might as well."
"Well, then," Christopher says, standing. "Think I'm gonna head to bed. Been a long day."
"Night, son," Bobby says.
"Night," Christopher says as he leaves the room.
"Night, guys," Lucas says. He and Emma join hands and leave the room, too.
After the young folks are gone, Bobby finishes off his glass of bourbon. Ann walks over to him. "You alright?" She asks.
"Yeah. Just a little worried about McKay."
"That because you're really concerned about HIM, or about Tracey?" Ann asks.
"Carter McKay is a real son of a bitch who caused my family a lot of grief in the past. But that doesn't mean I wish the man any harm. Christopher's right. It has been a long day, so let's go up to bed." Bobby and Ann join hands and leave the room together.
Parkland Hospital....
"Yes, we are," Tracey replies as they all stand to face the doctor. "How is my father?
"He's resting comfortably."
"Was it a heart attack?" Tripp asks.
"Yes, a mild one. He's very lucky. It could've been a lot worse for a man of his age."
"Will he be alright?" Tracey asks.
"With a lot of care and rest, he has an excellent chance of recovering. However, your father is not a young man. If he is to recover and live a normal life, he will have to take it easy, and keep his stress to an absolute minimum. This heart episode was mild, brought on by stress. But your father is eighty-seven, and the next time, he won't be so lucky. He's in ICU right now, and resting. We have him sedated. There's nothing more you can do here tonight, so why don't you all go home and get some rest."
"Thank you," says Tracey. The doctor leaves the room.
Tripp embraces her. "Aunt Tracey, you can stay at my new apartment tonight."
"Thank you, sweety. I'd love to. I'm exhausted."
Amanda's apartment....the next morning
"John Ross," she says.
He turns around. "Mornin'."
"Are you okay?"
"No, Amanda, not really."
"You wanna talk about it?" Amanda asks.
"It's alright. You're thinkin' about Mr. McKay, aren't you?"
"Yeah. If that old man dies, I'll be partly responsible."
"John Ross, I don't know what all has happened between your family and the McKays, but Mr. McKay started that fight. It wasn't your fault."
"Seems like everything I try to do, I end up hurtin' someone," John Ross says with a sigh. "Guess I learned that skill from my father."
"I wish there was something I could do to make you feel better," Amanda says.
"You've already done it. Just by bein' here. By listetin' to me every time I need to bitch about stuff. I really appreciate it."
Amanda smiles. "Anytime."
"I think I'm gonna get a shower, and then go home to Southfork for a while."
"You sure? You know, you're more than welcome to stay."
"I know," says John Ross. "But I kinda need to be alone for a while. And I'm sure you have a life of your own you'd like to get back to."
"I'll make some breakfast while you're in the shower," Amanda. John Ross nods, then kisses her sweetly. He gently touches her face, then turns and walks into the bedroom. Amanda waits until she hears the bathroom door close and the shower start, then she begins to cry. "Damn you, John Ross," she says quietly in tears. "All I'd heard was what a real jerk you were. But why'd you have to turn out to be such a sweet guy?"
Southfork....
"Morning," Lucas says.
"Good morning," says Bobby. "You sleep well?"
"Yeah, I did. Emma went out like a light, and she's still sleepin'."
"So's Ann. She was so tired last night I didn't wanna wake her this mornin', so I let her sleep in. It was real nice havin' you and Emma stay here last night, Lucas."
"Yeah, it was nice," Lucas says.
Lucas sighs. "Thanks. I am ready to move out of that hotel after all this time. Mom asked me about movin' in with her and Ray once they get settled."
"Oh, I see," Bobby says.
"I'm not sure what I wanna do yet. But I'll let you know."
Bobby smiles. "Good. No pressure, but the offer's always open," he says as Christopher walks in.
"Mornin'," Christopher says, dressed in his workout clothes.
"Mornin' son. Where you headin' so early on a Sunday?"
"Thought I'd go for a run. Maybe work out a little."
"I wish I were a few years younger, or I'd join ya."
Christopher laughs slightly. "Dad, you're not old by any means."
"Maybe not, but I have slowed down some."
"How 'bout you, Lucas?" Christopher asks, looking at his brother. "Wanna come?"
Lucas smiles. "Sure. Just let me run change real fast."
"Okay, I'll wait. Hey, you ever played racquetball?"
"A little, when I was in college."
"Good. I'll beat you in a couple games."
"Be right back," Lucas says. He leaves the room and heads down the hallway to Emma's bedroom.
Bobby looks at his older son. "Christopher, that was very nice of you to invite your brother to work out with you. I appreciate it."
"You were right, Dad. Lucas and I did have a lot of resentment toward each other, but I think it's time we put that behind us and become a real family. I wanna get to know him."
Bobby smiles with pride.
Parkland Memorial Hospital....
"Are you family?"
"Yes, we are."
"He's in room 4, down the hall. The doctor is in with him,"
"Thank you." Tracey and Tripp walk just down the hall to room 4, where the look in the open door and see the doctor finishing up his examination of Carter, When he finishes, the doctor walks into the hall and closes the door behind him. "How's my father?" Tracey asks.
"He had a restful night," the doctor replies. "His vitals look better this morning, although his blood pressure is still dangerously high. He's not out of the woods yet, but with proper care, he should be alright."
"Can we see him?" Tripp asks.
"Yes, but only for a few minutes. He's asleep now, And please, if he wakes up, try not to let him get too excited."
"Thank you, doctor," says Tracey. She and Tripp walk into Carter's room and over to his bed. Tracy looks
"He's gonna be okay, Aunt Tracey," says Tripp. "He has to."
"Yeah. He has to," she says. "You know, Tripp, I've spent most of my life both loving and hating my father. And now, I can't imagine my life without him."
Tripp puts his arm around his aunt.
LA Fitness Club, Dallas....
Christopher and Lucas are enjoying a hectic game of racquetball at Dallas's LA Fitness Athletic Club, and Lucas is winning. After Lucas scores his final point, winning the game, a breathless Christopher collapses to the floor as Lucas smiles, savoring his victory.
"I didn't realize I was out of shape until I played three games of racquetball with you," Christopher says. "Damn, I'm gettin' too old for this."
Lucas walks over and grabs two towels, then returns and takes a seat on the floor beside his brother, tossing a towel to Christopher. They both wipe the sweat from their faces and necks. "Christopher, can I ask you a question?"
"Sure."
"You and John Ross don't get along that great, do you?"
Christopher looks at him. "Is it that obvious?"
"Is there anybody that guy DOES get along with?" Lucas asks.
Christopher sits up. "Yeah.....himself."
Lucas laughs at the comment.
"Actually," Christopher continues, "John Ross and I use to be really close when we were kids. He was my best friend. Even when we were teenagers."
"So what happened?"
"We grew up. We both changed. And.....Elena Ramos came along. Her mother came to work for us at Southfork when I was about twelve. She and I grew up together and became close friends. And that friendship turned into my first love. John Ross and Sue Ellen were still living in England then, but John Ross would come back to visit from time to time. Then after he and Sue Ellen moved back, he would hang around with me and Elena. I always thought I'd marry Elena, but, first one thing and then another got in the way."
"Like what?" Lucas asks.
"We went off to college. Then later, we actually were about to get married. But, something happened, and it broke us up."
"John Ross?"
"Not exactly," Christopher replies. "Least not at first. It's all very complicated, Lucas, and I'm sure you don't really wanna hear this."
"You're wrong. I do. Christopher, when I first found the truth about Bobby bein' my father, I was hurt. Real hurt. And I took that hurt out on you. Growing up, I had two sisters. Charlie, of course was a lot older than me, so by the time I even started school she was already an adult. And Margaret lived with her mother in Washington, and we only got to see each other on holidays and special occasions. But I always wanted a brother. I didn't exactly get one the way I'd always pictured it, but now that I do have a brother, I'd really like us to get to know one another."
Christopher smiles. "So would I."
"Then tell me," Lucas says. "What happened between you and Elena? Why didn't you get married?"
"Tell ya what, little brother," Christopher says, standing to his feet. "I'm starving after that workout you gave me. Let's get showered and go somewhere and grab some lunch? Maybe I'll tell you over lunch, or we could save that story for another time."
Lucas looks up at him and smiles. "Fair enough. Kinda hungry myself."
Christopher extends his hand and helps Lucas to his feet.
Southfork....
"I was going stir crazy at home," Sue Ellen says. "You know there are times when I positively hate the weekends these days."
"Why's that?" Ann asks.
"Well, I work all week at Ewing Global, and that keeps me very busy. Then when the weekends come, I have nothing to do but rattle around in that big house all alone."
"Of course."
"I think your problem is that you're just plain lonely."
Ann stands and walks over to her. "Then why not do somethin' about it?"
"Such as?" Sue Ellen asks.
"Such as goin' out and meetin' somebody. Sue Ellen, you're still a very beautiful woman, and there's no reason for you to spend the rest of your life alone."
"I wish it were that simple. Strange thing is, there was a time when I was perfectly happy and content with my life. Politics kept me busy. But it's like, when J.R. died......I don't know how to explain it."
"I do," says Ann. "You said it yourself at his funeral. J.R. was the love of your life, and I think you're still not over him."
"Maybe I never will be," Sue Ellen says as Bobby walks into the room.
"Oh, I'm sorry," he says. "Hope I'm not walkin' in on somethin'."
"No, not at all," Sue Ellen says. "Bobby, have you heard from Carter McKay at all?"
"I called the hospital, but, they wouldn't give me any information. I called Tracey earlier, but she didn't answer, which isn't surprisin' after last night."
"You wanna join us for tea?" Ann asks, sarcastically as she looks at him.
Bobby smiles. "No thank you. I have someone comin' any time now about that ranch hand job."
"Oh, you're hiring a new hand?" Sue Ellen asks.
"Yeah, we been a little short here for a while now since we lost both Bo and Heather. So, I put an ad in the paper and on the internet. So far, I haven't had any luck." As Bobby finishes his sentence, the front doorbell rings. "Oh, must be the guy I'm expectin'."
"Yes, I'm Bobby Ewing."
"I'm Randall. Randall McCoy. I'm here about your ad you placed for a ranch hand." The young man extends his hand.
"Hello, Randall," Bobby says, shaking his hand. "Please, come in."
Randall walks into the house as Sue Ellen and Ann appear in the foyer. "Thank ya, sir," he says with a thick southern drawl.
"Randall, this is my wife Ann, and my sister-in-law, Sue Ellen Ewing," Bobby says, introducing the women.
"Pleased to meet you, ladies."
"Same to you, Randall," says Ann.
"Let's go into my office," Bobby says, pointing Randall to his right. Randall walks into the office. Bobby looks at the women and smiles, then follows the young man into his office, closing the door behind him.
Tripp's apartment....
Tripp pauses a moment as he watches her. "Aunt Tracey," he finally says.
"Oh, Tripp, you scared me."
"I thought you were gonna take a nap."
"I couldn't sleep," Tracey says.
"Come on, you were up all night," says Tripp.
"I know. I just had to call the hospital and see how your grandfather is doing." Tracey turns around and walks over to him.
"Any change since this mornin'?"
"No. He's still sleeping, which is a good thing, because if he was awake he'd pitch one hell of a fit to get out of that place." Tracey looks at her phone and sees three missed calls from Bobby. "Hmm," she says.
"What is it?" Tripp asks.
"Bobby Ewing called three times. I guess he wanted to see how your grandfather's doing."
"Well I hope you're not planning on returnin' those calls, unless it's to tell Bobby Ewing to go straight to hell,"
Tripp says.
"Aunt Tracey, when are you gonna wake up and see who those people are?" Tripp asks.
"Tripp, please, don't start this again."
"Start what, Aunt Tracey? You heard what Granddad said last night. John Ross Ewing stole Westar because he blackmailed the largest shareholders out of their shares."
"So what if he did?" Tracey asks. "That has NOTHING to do with us. Our family hasn't been actively involved in Westar for years,"
"No, but Granddad still owns a good chunk of stock, and he spent most of his life with that company. Do you really think he wants it controlled by a Ewing? Especially J.R.'s son? I dunno how, but I'm gonna figure out a way to get John Ross out of Westar and bring him down."
"Would you listen to yourself? You're sounding exactly like Carter McKay right now!" Tracey walks to the door, then turns back to her nephew, tears in her eyes. "Tripp, I lost my brother because of this family's fight with the Ewings. I lost my other nephew because of it, and now I might lose my father. The last thing in the world I wanna do is lose you because of this stupid feud. Westar is gone, Tripp. John Ross controls it. I think we should just talk your grandfather into selling his shares and we can all just leave Dallas and never look back."
"I'm sorry, Aunt Tracey, but I can't do that," Tripp says, walking over to her. "The Ewings have caused too much damage to too many people. I have to stop 'em. If you don't want any part of that, then that's fine. Pamela and I will do it. We'll stop the Ewings together. For her family, and for mine." Without another word, Tripp walks out of the room, leaving Tracey terrified of what would happen in the future.
Southfork....
"Yes, sir, Mr. Ewing."
"To be honest, Randall, I was expectin' someone a little older, but you're certainly qualified," Bobby says. "How old are you, if you don't mind me askin'."
Bobby smiles. "Alright, then. Randall, you've got yourself a job."
"Thank you. Thank you, Mr. Ewing," Randall says, smiling ear to ear. "When do I start?"
"Tomorrow soon enough?"
"Tomorrow's just fine."
"Great," Bobby says. He reaches into his desk and takes out some papers. He hands them to Randall, along with a pen. "You can fill this out now, or later on when you're settled in the bunk house if you'd like."
"If it's all the same, I'll do it later."
"That's fine. Just make sure you turn it back in to me by tomorrow mornin'," Bobby says. "Come on, I'll show you to the bunk house. Got your things outside?"
"Yes, sir, in my truck out front," Randall says.
"Get your things, drive out that gate," Bobby says, pointing. "Take a right and drive to the end of that road. I'll meet you there."
"Sure thing." Randall stands and follows Bobby out of the office.
"John Ross," says Bobby. "I'd like you to meet Randall McCoy, a new hand I just hired. Randall, my nephew, John Ross."
"Hi," Randall says, extending his hand.
Randall smiles. "Thanks. I think I'm gonna enjoy workin' here."
"Randall, just drive down to the end of the road, and I'll see you in a couple minutes," Bobby says.
Randall nods then walks out the front door.
"Kinda young, itn't he?" John Ross asks.
"Maybe so, but he's qualified, and I like him. Just somethin' about the kid I like." Bobby turns and walks out, leaving John Ross thinking. He's unable to explain it, but John Ross feels there is something strange about their new ranch hand.
Southfork.....that night
"You were awfully quiet tonight during dinner," he says. "Somethin' botherin' you, honey?"
"What?" Ann asks, not hearing what he had said.
"I asked if anything is botherin' you."
"I was just thinkin' about Sue Ellen," Ann says. "Bobby, we've really gotta do somethin' to help her."
"Help her?" Bobby asks. "Help her how?"
"We were talkin' this afternoon before you came in, and, well, she's lonely, Bobby. Really lonely."
"Yeah, I kinda figured. It's been a long time since Sue Ellen's had a romance, or even a companion."
"Exactly," says Ann. "Bobby, you know a lot of people. Isn't there SOMEONE you can set Sue Ellen up with?"
"What about Bum?" Ann asks.
"Bum?"
"Yes, he's been single for a long time too, hasn't he? And he must get as lonely as Sue Ellen?"
Bobby walks around the bed to his wife. "Honey, come on. Sue Ellen and Bum? That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. No two people in the world could be more different."
"Well, how about....."
"Shhhhhh," Bobby says, putting his hand over his wife's mouth. "Annie, I appreciate you wantin' to help Sue Ellen. But things like romance just need to happen on their own, without any outside help. Now, let's get to bed, it's been a long and exhausting weekend." Bobby takes his hand away, kisses Ann, then crawls into bed as she looks at him somewhat angrily. Then she starts thinking.
Meanwhile....
The Krebbs Ranch....the next day
"Matt, Jenna and I really appreciate you and Margaret comin' up from Austin to help us with the move," Ray says.
"Glad to help out, Ray," says Matt.
"Listen, before we go in the house, I wanted to ask ya. Has John Ross bothered you anymore since the barbecue?"
"Good. But, of course, don't let your guard down. That nephew o' mine can be just as tricky as J.R. was."
"I'm not worried about John Ross in the least. But I am a little concerned about Margaret."
"Oh? How come?" Ray asks.
Matt sighs. "Ever since I told her that John Ross was trying to blackmail me, Margaret hasn't been herself. She's been......I dunno, more quiet. I think she's worried about John Ross exposing her arrest. But if he does, I swear I'll break his damned neck."
"You'd have to stand in line behind me to do that, son," says Ray as they go into the house. Walking in, they find Jenna and Margaret unpacking and unwrapping Jenna's chinaware.
"Here's a couple more boxes," Ray says as he and Matt sit the boxes on the table.
"Thank you," says Jenna.
"Only a couple more," Matt says.
"I'll sure be glad when all our stuff gets here," Ray says.
"Jenna, this is gorgeous," Margaret says, holding up a very beautifully designed plate.
"It's all very pretty."
"Soon as Matt and I bring in those last two boxes, what say we take a breather?" Ray asks. "I'd kinda like to give you two the fifty cent tour of the ranch."
"I'd like that, Daddy," says Margaret.
"We'll be back." Ray and Matt again leave the house to get the remainder of the boxes.
"Jenna, can I ask you something?" Margaret asks.
"Sure. What is it?"
Jenna sighs, and looks at the young woman for a moment. "Initially, it was mine. I wanted to be near Lucas."
"But now you've had a change of heart?"
"When I told Ray that I wanted to move back, I didn't mean back HERE. To this house."
"Bad memories?" Margaret asks.
"Yes," Jenna replies.
Margaret stands and walks over to her stepmother. "Jenna, I"m not trying to pry. But, mind if I asked what happened? I mean, I know that you and Uncle Bobby were involved before you married Daddy. Does your apprehension about moving back here so close to Southfork have to do with that?"
Before Jenna can answer, Ray and Matt come back, each carrying a fairly large box in their arms. They put the boxes down in the living room. "There, that's the last of the stuff we have now," Ray says. "Now we gotta do this all over again when the rest of our stuff gets here."
Ewing Global....
"Excuse me," Jillian says.
"May I help you?" Amanda asks.
"Is Lucas Ew......Lucas KREBBS in?"
"Yes, he is. May I say who's calling?"
"Jillian Cryder."
Amanda picks up her phone and buzzes Lucas's office. "Lucas, Jillian Cryder is here to see you."
"Oh, thanks, Amanda," Lucas says. "Please send her in."
"Sure," says Amanda. "Third office on the right."
"Thank you," Jillian says politely. As she turns and walks to Lucas's office, Amanda watches her.
Lucas stands from his seat behind his desk and walks over to the door as Jillian walks in. "Jillian, what a nice surprise."
"I hope I'm not intruding."
Jillian smiles. "I was wondering if you're free for lunch. I could kinda use someone to talk to, and you were the first person I thought of since you told me about your own experiences finding out who your father was."
"Yeah. It was a rough time. And as a matter of fact, I am free for lunch, so let's get out of here and I'll tell you all about it. My treat."
"Well, thank you."
Lucas walks over to his desk and shuts down his computer. "Ready?"
"Sure."
As the two head out of Lucas's office, Bobby walks by. "Jill, hello," he says.
"Hi."
"What brings you by?"
"Lucas is taking me to lunch," Jillian replies.
"I didn't even know you two had met," Bobby says.
"Yeah, we met the other night at the Oil Baron's Ball," says Lucas.
"Well, you two have fun," Bobby says as Sue Ellen walks over.
"We will. I'll be back in a couple hours," Lucas says. He and Jillian head for the elevator.
Bobby smiles as he watches his son and his newfound niece. "I'm glad Lucas and Jill met and that they're becoming friends," he says to Sue Ellen.
"Yes. That's very nice," she relies, seemingly uninterested.
Bobby turns to her, the smile disappearing from his face. "Are you alright, Sue Ellen?"
"I'm fine."
"No, you're not. Does Jill bother you?"
"No it doesn't. It makes ya sound human, Sue Ellen."
"Maybe I'm just being foolish. I know if it hadn't been Kimberly Cryder who broke up my marriage to J.R. it would've been somebody else. It's just that, her daughter is a living, breathing reminder of the pain I felt back then when I found out J.R. had cheated on me yet again."
Southfork....
"Hello," she says.
"You must be new here," Emma says. "I thought I knew all the hands."
"Today's my first day. And who might you be?"
"Emma Ryland. Bobby Ewing is my stepfather."
"Oh, I see," Randall says.
"I didn't catch your name," says Emma.
"Oh, sorry. Randall. Randall McCoy. So you live here on this big ol' spread?"
"Ummm, not exactly. It's a long story," Emma says as Christopher drives up in one of Southfork's pickup trucks.
Christopher gets out and walks over to them. "Emma," he says.
"Christopher. How's it goin'?"
"Great," Christopher says. "You must be Randall, the new hand."
"Hi, I'm Christopher Ewing, Bobby Ewing's son," Christopher says, extending his hand. He and Randall shake.
"It's good to meet you, Mr. Ewing."
"Please, call me Christopher. I thought I'd come out and give you and hand. Kinda show you the ropes a little."
"Thanks," says Randall.
"Well, I'll let you two guys get back to work," Emma.
"It was real nice meetin' you, Miss Emma," Randall says.
"Yeah, you too," Emma replies as she rides off.
Randall watches her with a smile. "So she's your, what.........your
stepsister?"
"That's right," Christopher says.
"Prob'ly has a boyfriend, right?"
Christopher laughs. "Actually, yeah. My kid brother."
Randall looks at Christopher with a puzzled expression. "Really? Hmmm, interesting," he says.
Meanwhile....
"I'll tell you one thing I learned from that experience," he says. "And that's NEVER try to fool my mom because I swear the woman has eyes in back and on the side of her head."
Jillian laughs at the comment. "Sounds like you had a pretty great childhood."
"I did. IT was a lot of fun, but probably not so much for my parents."
"Lucas, thank you for this," Jillian says. "I really needed this lunch, and a good laugh."
Lucas smiles. "Yeah, me too. Jill, the Ewings aren't exactly the easiest family in the world to be a part of. In fact, sometimes it's downright hard. But, it's really nice to have a friend in the family. Somethin' I haven't had before."
"Family," Jillian says. "That's a strange word for me. Never had much of one before. Growing up, my parents kinda went in their own separate directions. My father.....or, the man I thought was my father....never spent any time with me. Now I know why. He resented me because I was another man's child. So, it was always me and mom. And just me and the nanny whenever she decided to take one of her trips alone."
"Sounds like a pretty lonely childhood," says Lucas.
"It was. But I learned to cope. And now I find out that I have brothers, and aunts and uncles, and all these cousins I've never met. It's kinda weird."
"Yep.....you have aunts, uncles, cousins, ummmm.....two half-brothers, a nephew and a niece."
"I have a niece and nephew, too?" Jillian asks.
"Yeah," Lucas says. "J.R.'s oldest son, James, which is your half-brother, has a son, Jimmy, and a daughter Ashley."
"Wow. What are they like? How old are they?"
"I have no idea. I've never actually met them. I met James once, when our grandmother, Miss Ellie, died. I was fourteen then. But, never met his wife and kids."
Jillian sighs. "So strange to know I have all these relatives I've never met before."
"You and me both."
"What do you mean? You grew up in the Ewing family."
"Ehh....kinda, sorta. I was raised a Krebbs. And my dad.....my STEPdad, Ray, he never felt like a real Ewing, bein' as he was Jock Ewing's illegitimate son. My mom always said that Uncle J.R. never really let Ray into the family fold. Called him a 'half-breed.' Then, my mom had this resentment thing goin' on with the family, so I never got to know my cousins either."
"Guess we're in the same boat," Jillian says sadly as John Ross walks up to their table.
"Well, fancy meetin' the two of you here," John Ross says. Both look at him, but say nothing. "Jill, I need to talk to you about the other night."
"There's nothing you have to say that I wanna hear," Jillian says.
"I just need to explain. What old man McKay said was....."
"Was what?" Jillian asks, looking at him. "Lies? I'd rather believe him than anything that comes out of your mouth."
"John Ross, you heard the lady," Lucas says. "She doesn't wanna talk to you, so why don't you get lost?"
Lucas stands to face him. "Want me to put my foot up your ass?"
"Wanna take this outside and try it?"
"Stop it, both of you!" Jillian says sternly. "John Ross, just call me later. But right now, Lucas and I were enjoying a really nice lunch until you showed up."
John Ross and Lucas continue to angrily stare each other down for a moment. "Fine," John Ross says. "Enjoy your afternoon." Without another word, he walks away.
Lucas retakes his seat. "Boy, you two really can't stand each other, can you?" Jillian asks.
"I've never met ANYONE in my life who can piss me off as much as that guy can. If Uncle J.R. was anything like his son, it's no wonder so many people hated him."
Jillian looks at Lucas after he speaks these words about the father she had never known and never would know. What if all the stories she'd heard about J.R. Ewing were true? If he was indeed anything like her brother, then she knew the stories had to be true.
At that moment, Lucas's cell phone rings. He takes the phone from his pocket and see it's Margaret calling. "Jill, excuse me, this is my sister calling."
"Sure. I'm gonna visit the powder room. Be right back."
As Jillian gets up from the table, Lucas answers the call. "Margaret, hey."
"Really? That's great."
"Yeah, we're helping Daddy and Jenna move and get settled in the new, or old, house. And I'd love to see you while I'm in town."
"That's cool, I'd love to see you, too. How about lunch tomorrow?" Lucas asks.
"Lunch tomorrow sounds great," Margaret says. "I have something I wanna talk to you about, anyway."
"Yeah, there's somethin' I need to talk to you about, too. Tell you what, why don't you drop by Ewing Global tomorrow, around 12:30?"
"Sure. See you tomorrow."
"Okay, great. I'll see you then. Bye." Lucas ends the call and puts his phone away.
Parkland Memorial Hospital....evening
Tracey sits at her father's bedside as he sleeps, his room becoming ever darker as the sun sets over the city of Dallas late that evening. As Tracey sits back in her chair and picks up a magazine, a nurse walks in.
"Excuse me, Ms. McKay?" The nurse says.
"Yes?"
"You have someone here to see you. He's down the hall in the waiting room."
"Oh, thank you," Tracey says, getting up from her seat. She puts the magazine down, looks at her father sleeping, and leaves the room. She makes her way down the hall to the nearest waiting room. Walking in, she is annoyed to find Bobby waiting. "Bobby, what are you doin' here?"
"I came to see how your father is, Tracey."
"Do you really care?"
"Of course I care," Bobby says. "Look, I'm real sorry for what happened at the Ball the other night. But your father started that whole altercation and all of this could've been avoided."
"Well, I'm glad to hear he's gonna be okay," says Bobby. "And Tracey, contrary to what you might think, I never wanted anything like this to happen, despite all the bad blood between our families."
Tracey looks at him for a moment. "I believe you," she says. "You were always a good and decent man, Bobby. The other night, when I said what I did, I was upset and angry and scared. And I'm sorry."
"Thank you," Bobby says.
"What the hell is he doin' here?" Comes a male voice from the doorway. Tracey and Bobby turn and find Tripp standing there. He walks into the room. "What are you doin' here?"
"Bobby just came to see how your grandfather's doing," Tracey says.
"That's not true and you damned well know it," says Bobby.
"Why don't you just get out of here?"
"Bobby, please," Tracey says. "Maybe it's best if you left for now."
Bobby pauses a moment, then looks at Tripp. "You know, young man, your father was blinded and twisted by hate, same as your grandfather. It's real sad to see you follow that same path." Bobby brushes past Tripp and walks out.
Tripp looks at his aunt. "Why did you even let him in here and talk to him?"
Tracey turns and looks at him. "Because he's right, Tripp." She walks over to him. "And it breaks my heart to see what this hatred is doing to what's left of my family." Without saying another word, Tracey walks out.
Dallas....later
"Where the hell were you?" Cliff asks angrily. "We were supposed to meet at nine o'clock, I've been sitting here waiting on you in this God forsaken place for almost twenty minutes. I"ve seen at least three street gangs go by here and I could swear I heard a gunshot around the corner. I was afraid for my life."
"Well, if you wouldn't pick a God forsaken place like this for us to meet, you wouldn't have to worry."
"Listen, we have to meet in these out of the way places where no one would suspect either of us to go," Cliff says, "Do you really want the Ewings or any of their associates to see us together?"
"What is it you wanted?" Amanda asks.
"A progress report. How did things go the other night with John Ross after that fiasco at the Oil Baron's Ball?"
Amanda sighs. "I'm actually glad you called to meet me. I've been doing a lot of thinking. Mr. Barnes, I can't go on with this."
A look of annoyed displeasure crosses Cliff's wrinkled face. "What do you mean by that?" He asks.
"I can't continue t spy on the Ewings for you. Or to help you find something to ruin them."
"Where the hell is this coming from?" Asks an angry Cliff.
"The Ewings have been really nice to me," Amanda replies. "And....."
"Oh, good Lord," Cliff interrupts. "It's John Ross, isn't it? You're actually falling for that guy."
"You've been telling me all along what a low down, scheming, snake John Ross is, just like his father was. But, that's because you don't know him like I do."
"I have known John Ross Ewing since the day he was born," Cliff says.
"But you haven't been around him much. When I'm alone with John Ross, I see a totally different side of him. Sometimes, he's like a lost little boy who just needs some direction in his life."
"Just stop right there," says Cliff. "Don't you see what's happening here? John Ross is just like his daddy, a real smooth sweet talker with the ladies. But Amanda, that guy is just using you and doesn't give a damn about you. And besides, I'm payin' you a lot of money to help me find something to destroy the Ewings with, and you owe me. BIG time. Now, I trust you have the latest tape of you and John Ross talking?"
Amanda pauses a moment and looks at Cliff. Then she reaches into her pocket and pulls out a small box and hands it to Cliff. He smiles.
"Thank you, Amanda. You're doing the right thing. You may THINK John Ross is a good, kind man but Adolf Hitler could convince people he was saint, too, but that sure didn't make him one. Now, as soon as you can, I want you to get John Ross to talking about Westar, and see if he'll confess whether he really did blackmail those Westar shareholders into playing ball with him, or if McKay was just lyin' the other night."
"Please don't make me keep doing this."
Cliff looks at Amanda and smiles. "You've got no choice," he says. He pats her face with his gloved hand, then walks back to his car. As he's about to get in, he turns to Amanda. "Just remember all the lives those Ewings have ruined, mine included. And when ya think about how sweet and gentle John Ross is, or how nice Bobby and Sue Ellen seem to be, just remember.....a Ewing is a Ewing." Cliff quickly gets into his car, then lets the window down and looks out at Amanda. "If I were you, I wouldn't hang around this neighborhood any longer." Cliff lets his driver's door window back up, starts his car, and drives off, leaving Amanda in tears.
Southfork....the next morning
"Good mornin', you two," Ann says.
"Mornin'," Lucas says back as he and Emma take seats.
"Dad, I worked with the new hand, Randall, most of the day yesterday," Christopher says.
"And what was your impression?" Asks Bobby.
"Seems like a nice guy. He knows a lot, and he's a fast learner. I think he'll do well."
Bobby smiles. "Good. I thought so, too. There was just somethin' about him I liked."
"Where's he from?" Emma asks.
"Well, his job application said he's worked all over. Grew up in Florida, though," Bobby replies. "Oh, Lucas, how'd your lunch go yesterday with Jill?"
"Great. I really like her. We talked a lot, and, she had a very lonely childhood."
"Poor girl," Ann says.
"By the way, where's John Ross this morning?" Lucas asks.
"He left early. I heard him leave at least an hour ago," says Ann.
"Good. Because I really didn't feel like seeing him this morning."
"Why? What happened between you and John Ross now?" Christopher asks.
Lucas sighs. "He came by our table when Jill and I were having lunch yesterday, bein' his usual charming self. He upset her."
"Lucas, you have to learn how to ignore John Ross," says Emma.
"I can't. He just gets under my skin."
"Believe me, little brother, I understand," Christopher says.
"You know, Christmas is coming soon," Lucas says. "And, I'd kinda like to invite Jill to have Christmas with the family here at Southfork."
"Lucas, that's a wonderful idea," says Ann. "But, I'm not sure if it would be too hard on Sue Ellen."
"Why, is she having a problem with Jill?" Christopher asks.
"Sue Ellen is just goin' through a rough time right now," replies Bobby. "And findin' out that J.R. has a daughter with Kimberly Cryder has only added to it. She's havin' a rough time dealin' with it because it brings back some painful memories."
At that moment, a knock comes on the sliding glass doors, and they can see it's Randall holding some papers.
"Oh, excuse me," Bobby says. He gets up from the table, walks over, and opens the door. "Mornin', Randall, come in."
"Good mornin', Mr. Ewing," Randall says, walking into the house. "A guy just delivered some feed you ordered. Here's the paper work."
"Oh, thank you," Bobby says, taking the papers from the young man.
"Would you like some breakfast?" Ann asks.
"Hold on a second and I'll come help," Christopher says as he gulps down the last of his breakfast.
"Oh, Randall, I don't think you've met some other members of my family," says Bobby. "You've met my wife Ann, and Christopher. This is my other son Lucas, and my stepdaughter Emma."
"We met yesterday when I was out riding," Emma says.
"Yes we did," says Randall.
Christopher gets up from the table. "Well, you ready?" He asks Randall.
"Yep."
"See y'all later," Christopher says.
"Y'all enjoy your day," Randall says as he and Christopher leave.
"That's a really nice young man," Ann says after they've gone.
"Yeah, he is," agrees Bobby. "I think he's gonna be a real asset around Southfork."
Parkland Memorial Hospital...
"Granddad," Tripp says.
"Tripp," the old man says weakly. "Where's....Tracey?"
"I got here early and sent her to my place to get some rest. She was here all night and she was exhausted. How do you feel?"
"Like hell. So what's that doctor saying? Am I gonna die?"
"It wasn't your fault. It was those damned Ewings. John Ross, he stole Westar from Kimberly's daughter, just like his father did to me....." As the old man talks, his heart rate begins to go up and Tripp can tell he's getting agitated.
"Granddad, stop. Just calm down. You can't let yourself get too excited."
"I'm sorry."
"It's okay. Just relax. Rest," Tripp tells him. Carter closes his eyes again. Tripp watches his grandfather, the man who raised he and his twin brother after their mother abandoned them on his doorstep. The man who taught him everything he knows. A tear falls down his face. "Don't worry, Granddad," he says. "I promise you. I'm gonna get those Ewings. For you. For my brother. For my father. I dunno how yet, but I will."
The Krebbs Ranch....later
"Hey, Bob," Ray says.
"Ray."
"What brings you out here? Figured you'd be at the office by now."
"I was on my way," Bobby says. "Had some stuff to take care of at Southfork first. That's one thing I love about havin' Sue Ellen in the office. She and Lucas can handle things when I need some time away from there."
"So, Lucas is doin' good at Ewing Global, huh?" Ray asks.
"He's doin' great. I just thought I'd stop by and see if you and Jenna are settling in well."
"We are. Margaret and Matt have been helping us move in. Sure feels great to be back here at the old place. I still missed it, even after all these years."
"That's not surprising," Bobby says. "After all, you built this ranch, and the house."
"With my own two hands. I'm glad it had people who lived here after me who took care of the place. Even ol' Carter McKay. You heard from him since the night of the ball?"
"Yeah. I went by the hospital last night, and he's doin' better. Tracey said the doctors seem to think he'll make a recovery."
"Well, I am glad to hear that," says Ray.
"So am I. Listen, Ray, why don't you and Jenna come over for dinner tonight?"
"What do you mean? Is there a problem?"
"Good question. All I can say is, she's gettin' harder and harder to figure out all the time. It was her idea to move back here because she wanted to be close to Lucas. So, I surprised her by buyin' back our old ranch. That didn't make her too happy. Says the reasons we moved away from Southfork in the first place haven't changed, even after all this time, if that makes any sense. So, I dunno. Jenna just duttin' seem happy about anything these days."
"I'm sorry, Ray," Bobby says. "Maybe it's the move. The stress of it and everything. I'm sure that, once you two get settled in, things'll get back to normal."
Ray nods. "I hope you're right."
Klyde Warren Park, Dallas.....later
"God, it's so beautiful here," Margaret says.
"Yeah, it is. I love livin' here."
The smile disappears from Margaret's face. "Lucas, what I wanted to talk to you about, is Daddy and Jenna."
"What about them?" Lucas asks.
"What's really going on with them? I mean, Daddy said it was your mother's idea to move back to Dallas, but, she doesn't seem very happy about it. And, I dunno, I just get the feeling something's wrong, and that it has to do with you."
"With me?" Lucas asks, his mouth full.
"Yeah. Jenna wanted to move to Dallas to be near you, right? So, what's the reason you moved here? You've never spent more than a couple days in Dallas since you were a baby."
Lucas puts his fork down and sighs. Then he looks across the table at her. "Okay. Margaret, I see they haven't told you."
"Told me what? Lucas, WHAT is going on?"
"You're right. There is something going on, and it does have to do with me. You know that my Mom and Bobby had a relationship a long time ago, right?"
"Yeah, before she married Daddy."
"Margaret, the truth is.....Dad....Ray....isn't my real father. Bobby is."
"Bobby's my real father."
Margaret's mouth drops open in shock. "How long have you known?"
"I found out a few months ago, after we came back when everyone thought Christopher had been killed."
"Oh, Lucas, my God. You must've been blown away," Margaret says.
"I was. I stayed angry for a while. Didn't wanna have anything to do with Mom, Ray, or Bobby."
"What changed?"
Lucas sighs. "I realized that holdin' on to that anger was just tearin' me down. See, Bobby and my Mom were engaged. But then, he realized he still loved Christopher's mom, Pam. So, he broke up with Mom and remarried Pam, but my Mom was pregnant with me."
"And Daddy married her, knowing she was carrying his brother's child?" Margaret asks.
"He loved her."
"Wow, this family's even more screwed up than I thought it was. That explains why you're working at Ewing Global and moved into Southfork."
"Once I got over my anger, I wanted to get to know Bobby and the rest of the family. And I'm glad I did. They're all really cool. Well, everyone except for John Ross."
Margaret looks at him, then shakes her head. "John Ross," she says quietly. "Figures."
"Sorry I just sprung this on you like this, but I think you have a right to know, especially since everyone else does."
"I'm glad you told me. So, I guess I lost a brother."
Lucas reaches across the table and takes Margaret's hand. "No, you didn't. I will always consider you my sister. Besides, we're first cousins anyway now. And that's just a step below brother and sister, right?"
Margaret smiles. "I love you, Lucas."
"I love you, too."
Southfork....afternoon
"Whew, boy am I tired," he says.
"I thought you were goin' into the office today," says Ann.
"Nah. Probably tomorrow. I wanna work with our new hand, see that he's gettin' the hang of things, and so far, he's doin' great."
Ann smiles. "Well, your father always did have good taste."
"Yep, especially when it comes to his wives," Christopher says, kissing his stepmother on the cheek.
"Want me to fix you some lunch?"
"That'd be nice."
"Take a load off and I'll whip somethin' up," Ann says. Christopher takes a seat on one of the sofas, then Ann starts to leave the room, but turns back to him. "Ummm, Christopher, can I ask you somethin'?"
"Sure, what's up?"
"Dusty? Why in the world are you asking about him?"
"Oh, I was just curious. Sue Ellen has told me about him. They were very much in love at one time, weren't they?"
"Yeah, I guess. I mean, I was too young to remember."
"Well, from the way she's spoken about him to me, it kinda sounds like Dusty was the other great love of her life. After J.R."
"Ann, what's goin' on?" Christopher asks. "Why this sudden interest about a man you've never met?"
Ann smiles. "Like I said, I was just curious. I'll fix your lunch now. How does cold cuts sound?"
"Sounds great," he replies.
Ann again starts to walk out, but turns back to him. "Oh, and......there's no need to tell your father I was askin' about Dusty," Ann says, then leaves the room, as Christopher wonders why she was asking questions about Dusty Farlow.
Later....
The Krebbs Ranch....late afternoon
"Sweetheart, I can't thank you enough for helpin' like this," Ray says.
"No problem, Daddy. Matt had that committee meeting in Dallas today, so, it was a chance for us to help you and Jenna move in while we're here."
"Well, havin' you here means a lot to me, Margaret."
Margaret is quiet for a moment. "Daddy, I had lunch with Lucas today."
"Oh?"
"He told me the truth about everything. That he's not really your son."
"He seems to have adjusted well to the news."
"Yeah, but it took him a while. For a long time he shut us all out. Me, Jenna, and Bobby. For a while I thought we'd lost him. But he eventually came around."
"How does it make you feel?" Margaret asks. "Being back here again, with all that stuff going on?"
"I'm glad to be back home," Ray says. "I missed this place a whole lot, and I always wanted to come back. I know Jenna seems a little funny about livin' in this house again, but she'll come around. And we're gonna be real happy here."
Amanda's apartment.....that night
"Evenin'," he says. "I was asked to deliver these beautiful flowers to a beautiful young lady, so I brought 'em to the most beautiful one I could think of."
Amanda smiles. "John Ross, they're gorgeous. Come in." He walks into the apartment and she takes the flowers from him. "I'll put these in water." She walks into the kitchen, grabs a large vase, fills it with water, and puts the flowers in, then returns to the living room, sitting the flowers on a table.
"Why don't you go get your gorgeous self all dressed up and I am gonna take you out to Dallas's most expensive and fanciest restaurant."
"Thanks, but, I'm really not up to going out tonight."
"Okay, then. Hell, I'd be happy just orderin' a pizza, and cuddlin' on the sofa watchin' a movie," he says.
Amanda turns and looks at him. "John Ross, I'd kinda like to be alone tonight."
"What's this? What's the matter with you? You been actin' strange for a couple days now."
"Nothing. I just need some time to myself. Please understand."
"No. It's nothing like that. John Ross, you're a great guy. An amazing guy. But, I think you're wanting to move a little too fast for me. I'm just not ready for anything serious right now."
John Ross moves closer to her. "Who said anything about gettin' serious? I just like bein' with you."
"I need time, John Ross. Time to myself, without you here."
John Ross is silent for a moment, the hurt on his face evident. "Alright. Fine," he says. "Have your time." Without another word, he turns and leaves.
After he's gone, Amanda starts to cry. "I"m so sorry, John Ross," she says quietly. "When I started this, I had no intention to fall for you. But I can't let myself care for you and betray you at the same time."
Southfork.....later
"Sure was quiet at dinner," Bobby says. "Where was everyone tonight?"
"Lucas and Emma went out to dinner with Ray, Jenna, Margaret. Christopher said he's exhausted and goin' to bed early, so he just took a tray to his room. And I have no idea where John Ross is."
Bobby sighs. "John Ross sure duttin' stay home much anymore, does he?"
"No. Notice how peaceful it is around here?" Ann says sarcastically.
"Well, what do you wanna do?" Ann asks. "I'm sure you wanna have the family over."
"I was thinkin' about that, and I'd like to go a little further than that."
"What do you mean?"
Bobby smiles. "I'd like to have a really big family Christmas. Have everybody come."
"Everybody as in....."
"As in.....EVERYBODY," Bobby says as he stands and walks over to his wife. "Gary and Val and their family, J.R.'s oldest son James and his family."
"Bobby, are you crazy?" Ann asks. "You really wanna have all those Ewings spendin' Christmas under one roof?"
"Absolutely," Bobby says. "Honey, it'll be great to get the WHOLE family together for once. I've thought about this all day since Lucas was talkin' about wantin' to invite Jill over for Christmas. Do you realize that half of my nieces and nephews have never even met each other? And Christopher and Lucas don't even know most of their cousins. Jill's never met any of them."
"I'm very serious. It'll be great havin' everybody together. A real Ewing family reunion."
"You know what? You're soundin' just like Chevy Chase in that Christmas movie right now."
Bobby smiles. "Just call me Bobby W. Griswold," he jokes. "Of course, if you don't wanna do it......"
"Oh, no you don't, Bobby James Ewing," Ann says, standing. "You are NOT gonna cancel all those grand plans for a big family Christmas and then blame it on me. I say let's do it."
Bobby kisses her. "I always knew I married the right girl," he says, smiling.
Meanwhile....Jillian's apartment
"John Ross, what are you doing here?" She asks.
"I called you earlier. You didn't answer," he says, walking in, staggering a bit. "You didn't answer."
"Because I wasn't in any mood to talk to you."
"So I guess you really didn't mean it when you told me to call you and we could talk."
"Look, I'm in no mood for this. I was just about to relax."
"Any chance I could stay the night? Sleep on your sofa?"
"I just......I don't really wanna go home to Southfork tonight, and I don't wanna be alone," John Ross says.
"Then I have a suggestion. Go downtown, flash some money around, and I'm sure you can find a prostitute to keep you company tonight. Or if you don't wanna go that route, I'm sure a rich guy like you can easily find a good call girl service."
"Damn it, it's a friend I need," says John Ross. "Someone to talk to."
"Well, sorry, but you're not gonna find that here, BROTHER."
A crushed John Ross looks at Jillian in silence for a moment. Then, without saying a word, he turns and leaves. After he's gone, Jillian starts to feel bad for him.
Sue Ellen's home....later....
Meanwhile...
As Emma and Lucas drive home to Southfork after dinner in Dallas with Lucas's family, Emma feels her cell phone vibrating in her purse. Taking the phone out, she sees it's John Ross calling. What could he want? She wonders. She doesn't answer.
"Who's calling?" Lucas asks, driving.
"I.....I don't know the number," Emma lies. "Must be a wrong number." She puts the phone back into her purse.
Back at Sue Ellen's....
